Josiah Tattnall papers, 1796-1798.

This collection contains four letters from Josiah Tattnall to William Hasell Gibbes, Ebenezer Jackson, George Jones, and Gov. James Jackson regarding Tattnall's property, his taking seat in the Senate, the treaty with Great Britain, and his decision to resign from the U.S. Senate. The collection also contains a document of regimental orders, signed by Tattnall, regarding defaulters and the election of a Major for the 2nd Battalion. All but one item of correspondence are photocopies; the location of the originals is unknown.

Ebenezer Jackson (1763-1837), the son of Michael and Ruth Jackson, was born in Newton, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, he enlisted in his father's regiment, the 8th Massachusetts Infantry; he served until 1783. Jackson moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he became a merchant, selling rice and cotton. George Jones was born in Savannah, the son of Noble Wimberly Jones. He studied medicine under his father and practiced for several years. He was in the Revolutionary War in it last years, served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature, was an Alderman and Mayor of Savannah, judge of the Eastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia, and a member of the U.S. Senate in 1807.
